Hazardous Weather Outlook: Winter Weather Update for Friday

The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia has released a briefing prepared as of 3:15 PM EST Thursday January 7, 2021 in regards to the upcoming winter weather event on Friday. Some uncertainty still remains regarding exact snow amounts and timing. However, the best chance for accumulating snow (~1") still remains across Southern VA along/south of Hwy 460 and along/west of Interstate 95 on Friday. Timing of the event has changed somewhat in that we now think precipitation will start as snow and then transition to a rain/snow mix or all rain from late morning into the afternoon. A rain/snow mix or a transition back to all snow is then expected as the precipitation ends from west to east Friday evening into Friday night.

It should be noted that model guidance continues to suggest a period of rain/snow or a brief changeover to all snow will occur even across portions of Hampton Roads and Northeast NC Friday night before the precipitation ends. The Richmond Metro itself is not expected to receive more than a coating of snow.

Low pressure passing through North Carolina will bring a mix of rain
and snow on Friday.

A mix of rain and snow is possible even into Hampton Roads and northeast North Carolina as the precipitation arrives Friday morning and ends Friday night. Little to no snow accumulation expected.

Hazards and Impacts

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for Lunenburg and Mecklenburg County beginning 4 AM EST Friday.
Plan on the possibility of slippery road conditions, especially within the advisory area. These hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commute.
No freezing rain or ice will occur with this event.
