Welcome to the Sussex County Finance Department Website

The Finance Department is responsible for accounts payable, payroll, general accounting, budget, financial reporting and grant administration.

The Director of Finance ensures fiscal integrity through the establishment of sound processes that safeguard assets. The Director of Finance manages the development and execution of the County's annual budget, performs various types of evaluation, research and analyses for the County Administrator, processes and manages an accurate and timely payroll for County employees, the Sheriff, General District Court, Registrar, Treasurer and Commissioner of Revenue.

The Director of Finance processes County and Constitutional Officer's invoices, travel advances and expenditures, risk management claims and debt payment, in accordance with budgetary controls and disbursements policies and procedures.


Manage day to day payroll processes, accurately process agency's semi-monthly payroll for full-time and part-time employees, verify documents, calculate pay, key payroll, balance and reconcile payroll, generate reports, process garnishments, child support and other court orders, in addition to performing leave accounting and fringe benefit administration. Reconciles and certifies W-2 forms for all employees; coordinates and resolves issues and disputes with the IRS, the Department of Taxation, and the Virginia Employment Commission. Maintains the Virginia Retirement contributions for all employees.

Accounts Payable

Oversees the procurement of all County supplies; prepares purchase orders; processes vendor invoices; distributes to proper departments for payment. Maintains records of all county receivables and payable; regularly produces report showing county expenditures and payments. Ensures that a variety of office records and forms are properly filed.
